The Hand of God

"The king had granted him everything he asked, for the hand of the Lord his God was on him." Ezra 7:6

Ezra was a man who enjoyed the favor of God. With that favor he helped restore the true worship of the God of Israel in the land of promise. Ezra had God's favor. Do we have God's favor?

The Scriptures says that believers in Christ have His favor. The blood of Jesus has purchased for us all the grace and favor we would ever need.

Let's look at Gal.1:3 - "Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."  Paul opened his letters usually with a greeting like this. But this raises an interesting question.  If "grace and peace" were 'automatic' for Christians then why did Paul open his letters with this kind of greeting?

Think on your life.  There have been times of incredible favor and blessing and peace.  And then there have been those other times.

We all know what those "other" times are. They are kind of like those Southwest Airlines TV commercials, when you have "just got to get away."  Except there is no place to go. You can see no way out. It could be sickness, or a financial disaster, or a relational failure. There are many versions of these "other" times.

I know God knows what I am going through. But sometimes that's not much comfort.  What would be comforting would be the deliverance we need from the trial we are going through, whether it is a healing, a financial blessing or perhaps a restoration of a relationship.

I know God knows what I am going through. But sometimes that's not much comfort.

What is going to get us through these other times is for God not only to know what is going on in our life but for Him to do something about it. What we need is for Him to give us His grace, His favor and His peace. But what can we do to get these things we need so badly?

Well there's a whole book written on that, and it's called the Bible. And the main theme of the Bible is the love of God expressed through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the answer for our every need. You need grace? Remember Who brings us grace: "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." John 1:17.

But just how do we get a handle on this grace? We can look back on Paul's letter to the Galatians for a clue. As we read Gal 3:1-5, we see that the Galatians were trying to obtain grace, favor and peace in their lives by their human efforts. Paul points out, however, that the key to obtaining grace, favor and peace is to have faith in God.

Paul urges us to look at the faith of Abraham in the verses which follow, Gal. 3:6-9. Paul wrote that Abraham "believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness."

He "believed God". But what did he believe?  A summary of Abraham's life is in Heb. 11:8-12, so let's look there.  We see that Abraham 1) received a promised land and 2) Abraham received a son.

In each case God said something specific and direct to Abraham before Abraham received his blessing. As we see in Heb. 11:8 - he was "called to go" to the promised land of Israel. And as we see in Heb. 11:12 - he believed "the promise" - the promise of a son.

God spoke promises to Abraham, and Abraham put His trust in what God spoke. The Scripture says, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."  Rom. 10:17

In the same way we can enjoy the blessings of God, His grace, favor and peace, if we receive His specific and direct promises.

We need a Word to guide us, to believe in, in order to know the Way.

Jesus says, "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life."  He is not the Event. He is the Way. And by His Spirit and His Word He shows us the Way.

Are you afraid? Don't know which way to go? Get a Word from God AND BELIEVE IT!! Remember what He spoke to you when times weren't as bad as they are now and BELIEVE IT!!

God will show us His Way.  Believe it!  "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." Ps. 119:105
