Backwards Christianity?

You know, Jesus did everything backwards! Or at least it seems that way to me sometimes. Jesus is a King and He has the right to rule everything, but when He made His grand entrance to the earth He wasn’t born in a palace. He was born in a barn! Really, is that any way for a King to claim His throne?!

Many years later when He began to minister God did many great miracles through Him. Yet, instead of exulting in all the attention He was getting, Jesus would hide from the crowds.

[Matthew 8:18] And, He would often tell the people He helped not to tell anyone one who did it! [Matthew 8:4; Matthew 9:30] Now, really, is that any way to grow a ministry?

But here we see in Jesus true meekness. Jesus admitted that He is “meek and lowly of heart”. Matthew 11:29 KJV. Jesus was so meek that He never exalted Himself in the world. He never tried to steal the spotlight. He just obeyed His Father and went out and loved on His sheep, like the Good Shepherd that He is.

Yet Jesus was no fool. He knew who He was. Even before He started His ministry He heard His Father’s voice from heaven speak about Him to everyone, saying, ‘“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”’ Matthew 3:17 ESV.

Jesus knew He was the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus knew He had favor with His Father and that He was called to bring redemption and salvation to the world. He knew He had authority over demons, over sickness, over death, and even the winds and waves obeyed Him. But He never used His authority and power to lift Himself up. Instead, He taught us that someone else was going to lift Him up. He said:

“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.” John 12:32-33 ESV

That’s right, other people were going to lift up Jesus, but not to a throne in a palace to worship Him, but onto a wooden cross on a hill to kill Him.

Jesus could not and would not lift Himself up for His own glory. If He was going to be lifted up to a position of honor, the Father was going to have to do it. And that’s exactly what happened.

As the Apostle Paul wrote, ‘And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name.’ Philippians 2:8-9 ESV

Jesus did not exalt Himself. God the Father exalted Him. And the reason that the Father exalted Jesus was because He obeyed His Father, even to the point of giving His life for us. Giving your life is NOT self-exaltation. Quite the opposite.

Remember, Jesus taught us, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5. Jesus taught that, and Jesus experienced that. In fact, Jesus is the meek one who is inheriting the earth!

Jesus never self-promoted, but He was promoted higher than every other name. Jesus never defended Himself, but He was vindicated from every false accusation against Him.

And Jesus is by far the most famous person who has ever lived, with millions and even billions of people who follow Him, honor Him, and worship Him, as they have for the last 2000 years.

So let me encourage you today. Become more like Jesus. Choose meekness, renounce self-promotion, and trust God to lift you up to the place He has promised you.
