The Cure for Discouragement

I’m just so encouraged today when I think about what God is doing in His church. All over the world people are getting saved, churches are being planted, the lost are being found, the blind are seeing and the sick are healed, all in the powerful Name of Jesus! So, really, what’s better than that?

But perhaps you are feeling some discouragement. Perhaps one of your candidates lost in the last election, or you lost a job or you lost someone dear to you in the pandemic. You watch the news but it seems it is always full of bad news. It may even get you wondering, is there any hope?

Throughout history we have seen nations rise and fall, we’ve seen tyrants rise up and get thrown down too, but the good news of the Kingdom of God just keeps rolling along, saving people and changing their lives. God is being glorified and His gospel program is advancing regardless of what news gets reported around us.

Even though Jesus promised us that in this world we would have trouble there is still hope. Why? Because Jesus said He had “overcome the world.” John 16:33. Today’s testimonies, and the testimonies we bring you on every show, are proof that Jesus really has overcome the world.

Although Jesus was killed nearly 2000 years ago, we know that He still lives today, not only interceding for us with the Father, but distributing gifts of the Holy Spirit as He desires, empowering us to triumph over Satan. As the Word says,

“Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Rev.12:10-11 NIV

Although this victory over Satan is certain we still need to resist him. “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 Now we don’t resist by force, but by standing our ground - strong in our conviction that Jesus is Lord and that we will obey Him and love others no matter what the devil throws at us.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:12-13 NIV

When we hear what God is doing now, and when we read the Bible and hear about what God has done to help His people in the past, well, it has to encourage you! As the Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans:

4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans 15:4 NIV

The “endurance taught in the Scriptures.” You mean, like how Moses led the Jews out of Egypt even though he knew Pharoah and his army would follow them, because “he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.”? Hebrews 11:27 NIV. Perhaps you mean like how Noah worked hard for many years to save his family in the midst of a wicked civilization that God was about to destroy? Hebrews 11:7

There are so many examples in Scripture of people enduring all kinds of difficulties because of their love of God. They were ultimately rewarded for their confidence in God. You too will be rewarded if you endure, because Jesus told us that “By your endurance you will gain your lives.” Luke 21:19 NIV.

So my friends, hang in there. Always pray and don’t give up! Do you remember the parable of the widow and the unjust judge in Luke 18? The widow would not stop bringing her plea to the judge and after a long time he finally gave her what she cried out for.

7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:7-8 NIV

Be encouraged! God will see that we get quick justice. Have hope! God is still moving mightily on the earth. He may not have fixed your problem yet but He is still God and He is still coming for those who are joyfully waiting for Him, never doubting His love and power. But, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith in you?
